Head into a quán cơm bình dân (common rice eatery) and there's a good chance you'll be able to get this dish. It's a popular one to eat for lunch. Vietnamese style grilled pork is flavourful -- usually due to the meat being marinated in garlic, lemongrass, pepper, fish sauce, soya sauce, etc. After being grilled over a set of hot coals, it's served over a bed of broken rice. Broken rice is just rice that's been broken up. Originally, it was packaged to be sold to poor people. It was made up of rice that wasn't fit to be sold as normal rice. Now it's a somewhat trendy thing to eat in Vietnam. In fact, if one doesn't have broken rice they may even resort to soaking normal rice then breaking it up with their hands. Cơm tấm sườn nướng is usually served with a side of sliced cucumber and tomato, and sometimes comes with some cabbage soup.
