Bot Chien

Fried Rice Flour Cakes

Personally, I think this dish would make a great breakfast, specially on a morning after a night of drinking, but unfortunately it's very difficult to find in the morning. Bột chiên stalls usually don't open until the afternoon. The dish is popular with students, usually as an after school snack. It's a very simple dish that doesn't have much flavor but provides much satisfaction. Rice flour is made into a cake, it's cubed, then fried up in a pan with egg. Green onions are sprinkled on top. It's usually served with shredded green papaya, and the little chunks of egg covered rice cake can be dipped in soy sauce. Sometimes you will see it called banh bot chien.
